Alexandria

Alexandroupoli sits on the north Aegean coast of Greece, facing the Sea of Thrace. It is the largest city in the Evros regional unit and one of the most accessible entry points to the region from Türkiye, connected by ferry from Çanakkale and by land crossings at the eastern border. The city grew from a small settlement around an old customs post into a regional capital, and it carries a relaxed, purposeful character shaped by its role as both a port and a university city.

The Lighthouse and Waterfront

The lighthouse at the tip of the seafront promenade is the most recognisable landmark. Built in 1850 under Ottoman administration and later rebuilt, it stands roughly 18 metres tall and has guided ships into the harbour for more than a century and a half. The promenade itself — a wide, palm-lined esplanade — runs between the lighthouse and the commercial harbour, and on most evenings it fills with people walking, sitting at cafés, or watching the ferry traffic cross the northern Aegean. The seafront gives the city a distinctive open feel for a regional capital.

History and Fortifications

The area around Alexandroupoli has been inhabited since antiquity, but the modern settlement took shape in the nineteenth century. North of the city, on a hill above the Evros river plain, the ruins of the Eptapyrgeion stand as a reminder of the region's Byzantine history. The fortress, whose name refers to its seven towers, occupies a strategic position controlling movement between the coast and the interior. Within the city itself, the Archaeological Museum of Alexandroupoli displays items spanning from prehistoric times through to the Roman period, drawn from sites across the Evros valley and coastal Thrace.

Character and Climate

The city has a markedly continental climate — summers are warm and can feel close, winters are cold with occasional frosts. For visitors arriving from the south, the change in light and air is noticeable. Alexandroupoli functions as a base for exploring the broader Evros delta and wetlands to the north, where migratory birds pass through in season, and for crossing into the interior of eastern Thrace.
