Avanos

On the banks of the Kızılırmak, Turkey's longest river, Avanos has been shaped by the same red clay that colours the surrounding Cappadocian landscape. The town's association with pottery stretches back to Hittite times, when the fertile river soil first suggested its use. Centuries of continuous craft have made the place synonymous with Turkish ceramics, and the tradition remains living rather than preserved — families still work at the wheel in workshops that have passed through generations.

Watching the wheel turn

Avanos feels less hurried than some Cappadocian centres. Along the main street that follows the river, pottery workshops open their doors to visitors. You can watch the potter's hands coax a form from the lump of clay — a jug, a plate, a decorative tile — then see the piece later fired and glazed in the traditional manner. The characteristic red-orange of Avanos pottery comes from the iron-rich local earth, a material that has defined the town's economy and identity for millennia.

The river and the old quarter

The Kızılırmak flows broad and slow here, and the bridges that cross it give views across to the old quarter. Traditional houses climb the slope on the far bank — stone ground floors with upper storeys of timber and plaster, a building style that speaks to older Anatolian vernacular traditions. The town's weekly market draws people from surrounding villages; it has the unhurried character of a genuine local exchange rather than a performance for visitors.

Avanos as a base

The town sits comfortably between the better-known centres of Göreme and Ürgüp, making it quieter for evening meals and morning walks. From here, the fairy chimneys of Devrent Valley are a short drive north, and the rock-cut churches of the Göreme Open Air Museum lie to the south-west. The Rose Valley and its network of walking trails are reachable on foot from the town's eastern edge, following paths that drop into a landscape of soft volcanic tuff, wine-dark in the evening light.
