Çeşme

Çeşme sits at the tip of a peninsula that stretches into the Aegean Sea, separated by a narrow channel from the Greek island of Chios. The town's name comes from the Turkish word for fountain, a reference to the thermal springs that have drawn visitors to this coast since antiquity. Today, Çeşme blends its maritime heritage with a laid-back resort atmosphere, its low-slung white buildings clustered around a sheltered harbor where fishing boats still come and go.
History written in stone
The peninsula has been inhabited since ancient times, with Greek, Roman, and Byzantine settlements layered through the centuries. The Genoese built a castle here in the fourteenth century on a promontory overlooking the sea — its weathered walls still stand, offering views across the channel toward Chios. The Ottoman period left its own marks on the town's architecture, particularly in the old quarter where narrow lanes pass between stone houses with wooden balconies overgrown with bougainvillea.
Water and wind
The bay below the town shelves gently, the water a clear turquoise that deepens to blue further out. To the north, near the village of Alaçatı, the prevailing northwestern winds make the shallow coves popular with windsurfers. The thermal springs that give the town its name emerge both along the shore and inland, their mineral content staining the rocks rust and ochre. Locals and visitors have bathed here for generations, sometimes in simple concrete pools built into the coastline, sometimes in more developed facilities.
Flavors of the Aegean
The surrounding countryside grows olives, grapes, and carob, and the local markets reflect this agricultural character. Stone-ground olives in various marinades, soft white cheese made from sheep's milk, carob molasses, and fresh seafood landed at the harbor — these are the tastes associated with Çeşme. In the evenings, tables spread along the seafront promenade as the day's heat softens, and the rhythm shifts to something unhurried: a long meal, a glass of local wine, the lights of Chios flickering across the water after dark.
