Cairo
A working district on Istanbul's Golden Horn where Ottoman-era workshops, tea gardens and centuries of layered urban life meet along the water's edge.
On the western shore of the Golden Horn, Cairo (Kârhane) is one of Istanbul's less visited neighbourhoods — a place where residential streets tumble down toward the water and the pace of daily life carries on largely undisturbed by tourism. Its name is thought to echo Egypt's Cairo, a reminder of the trading routes that once passed through here during Ottoman times.
Arriving along the Bosphorus shore
The approach by boat from central Istanbul is part of the experience. The Golden Horn opens up, fringed by old wooden fishermen's moorings and the occasional working shipyard. On arrival at the docks, the neighbourhood unfolds in steep lanes — stone-paved in places, with nineteenth-century apartment blocks giving way to smaller workshops and modest shops. The air carries the smell of the Bosphorus and, from nearby bakeries, the warm scent of simit baking on trays.
Markets, workshops and the Mihrişah Mosque
The local market area runs along the lower streets, selling household goods, fabric and seasonal produce from folding tables. Nearby, small workshops continue trades that have persisted here for generations — metalwork, leather goods, the repair of traditional items. Rising above the neighbourhood, the Mihrişah Sultan Mosque crowns the hillside: an eighteenth-century imperial mosque with a wide courtyard and views across the water toward the Asian shore. Its cemetery grounds are quiet, shaded by cypress trees.
Tea gardens above the water
The upper streets climb toward Pierre Loti Hill, where a tea garden overlooks the Golden Horn in the late afternoon light. The café here has been a gathering point for Istanbul writers and intellectuals since the early twentieth century. A cable car rises from the waterfront to reach it, but the walk up through the neighbourhood — passing older houses and the sound of birdsong from the surrounding gardens — gives a fuller sense of the place. Cairo rewards the unhurried visitor willing to sit with a glass of tea and watch the ferries cross the water below.
