Şirince
Şirince sits on a scrub-covered hillside above the Aegean lowlands, a village of whitewashed walls and red-tile roofs where olives and wine have shaped daily life for centuries.
From the ridge where the village clusters, the view drops away south across a broad agricultural plain to the sea. Fig and almond trees grow close to the stone houses, and oleanders line the lanes. The streets are narrow and uneven, winding between two-storey buildings whose upper floors often project over the ground floor like a gentle lean against the hillside. The village feels suspended above the plain, cooler in summer than the coast below.
Olives and wine
The surrounding slopes are planted with olive groves and vineyards. Local varieties of grape are pressed into red and white wines using methods rooted in the region's long viticultural history, and the village has become associated with small-scale wine production. Olive oil is equally central to the local economy — the harvest in autumn brings a different rhythm to the village, with oil presses operating in the surrounding settlements. Both products appear on village tables: wine poured from clay carafes, oil glistening on bread.
Architecture and texture
The houses reflect a mixed architectural heritage. Thick walls of local stone keep interiors cool in summer, and many doorways are arched. Balconies are often wooden, weathered to grey. At the edge of the village, a former Greek Orthodox church stands closed, its bell tower still part of the skyline — a reminder of the population exchange of the 1920s, when the village's demographic composition changed and its built fabric remained. The bazaar area runs along a single narrow lane where dried herbs, olive products and local wine are displayed on shared counters.
Walking through Şirince
There are no marked promenades or visitor centres. Most visitors walk the main lane from the bazaar toward the upper terraces, where houses give way to low scrub and the view opens. The walk to the church ruin and the ridge above takes under an hour at a relaxed pace. Below the village, a track winds through olive groves toward the plain. The village is small enough that orientation comes quickly — not from maps but from the slope and the views.
