Mardin Old Town

Climbing the hill southeast of the Tigris plain, Mardin Old Town is a city of narrow stone lanes, terraced houses and minarets visible from the flatlands below. The limestone used throughout gives the built environment a pale, warm tone that shifts from gold in morning light to deep amber at dusk.

Architecture and streetscape

The old city sits on a steep hillside, its streets stepping up in layered terraces. Traditional Mesopotamian-style houses — flat-roofed, built of local limestone and oriented inward around small courtyards — line the lanes. Several caravanserais from the medieval period still stand near the bazaar area, their high stone walls enclosing cool interior courtyards. The Great Mosque of Mardin (Ulu Cami), built in the 12th century, anchors the commercial district and its courtyard offers wide views over the plain.

A city of multiple faiths

Mardin is notable for the number of religious buildings standing close together. Along a short stretch of the old bazaar, one passes the Ulu Cami, the Zinciriye Medrese — a former theological school whose upper gallery overlooks the plain — and the Syriac Orthodox Church of the Forty Martyrs. This proximity of mosque, medrese and church reflects centuries of coexistence. The old Jewish quarter, with its stepped alleyways, lies on the upper streets of the town. Kurdish, Arabic and Syriac have all been spoken here, and the city has long served as a cultural intersection.

What you encounter walking through

Moving through the bazaar, you pass spice sellers and coppersmiths. The smell of sesame bread from a neighbourhood bakery drifts across a terrace wall. On the upper lanes, the sound of the city falls away and you look out over a landscape that has been farmed and settled since antiquity — the flat Mesopotamian plain stretching eastward, the Tigris glinting in the distance on clear days. The view from the zinciriye terrace is one of the most expansive in the region.
